Why Scale Weight Doesn't Tell the Full Story
Scale weight measures one thing: total mass. It cannot distinguish between muscle, fat, bone, water, or organ tissue. Two people can weigh exactly the same — say, 75 kg — and have radically different health profiles. One might be a lean, muscular athlete with 18% body fat. The other might be sedentary with 35% body fat and low muscle mass. Same number on the scale. Completely different bodies.
This is why body composition — the ratio of fat mass to lean body mass — is a far more meaningful measure than weight alone. Improving body composition means losing fat and preserving (or building) muscle. The goal is not just to weigh less, but to be leaner and stronger.
The same principle applies to tracking progress. If you are resistance training and eating well, you may gain 2 kg of muscle while losing 2 kg of fat over 8 weeks. The scale shows no change. But your body composition has improved significantly. Without measuring body fat and lean mass separately, you would miss all of that progress.
BMI: What It Measures and Its Limitations
Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. It was developed in the 19th century as a population-level statistical tool — never as an individual health diagnostic. Yet it remains the most widely used screening measure in medicine because it is fast, free, and requires only two measurements.
What BMI measures: weight relative to height. Nothing else.
What BMI cannot measure: muscle vs fat distribution, bone density, fat location (visceral vs subcutaneous), or age-related changes in body composition.

BMI is a useful first screen, but it consistently misclassifies muscular athletes as overweight and can miss high-risk "normal weight obesity" in sedentary individuals with low muscle and high fat. Use it as a starting point, not a conclusion.
Body Fat Percentage: A Better Measure
Body fat percentage (BF%) is the proportion of your total body weight that is fat tissue. Unlike BMI, it directly measures what you actually care about — how much fat your body carries relative to lean tissue. A muscular person at the same BMI as a sedentary person will have a dramatically lower body fat percentage.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) defines the following healthy ranges for adults:

Women naturally carry more body fat than men due to hormonal and reproductive physiology — the higher thresholds for women reflect a healthy biological baseline, not a health deficit. The "fitness" category is an achievable, sustainable goal for most active adults.
