Why the Same Weight Means Different Things at Different Ages
Here's the key insight about ideal weight by age: the BMI range doesn't change, but what that weight is made of changes dramatically.
Consider a 175 cm man at 72 kg (BMI 23.5 — healthy range) at different ages:

All three pass the BMI test with flying colours. But the 65-year-old has approximately 9.4 kg less lean mass than the 25-year-old — a dramatic difference in metabolic health, strength, and functional capacity. The scale and BMI both say "healthy." Body composition tells a very different story.
The Ideal Weight by Age Paradox: Higher BMI May Be Acceptable at 65+
A growing body of research on older adults — sometimes called the "obesity paradox" — suggests that a BMI of 25–27 (slightly overweight by standard classification) is associated with better health outcomes and longevity in adults over 65, compared to BMI 22–24.
The likely mechanism: some of the additional weight in older adults represents preserved lean mass (muscle and bone). People who maintain muscle into their 60s and 70s tend to weigh more than those who lose muscle — and the extra lean mass is protective.
The implication for ideal weight by age: after 65, chasing a low BMI target can be counterproductive. Focusing on lean mass preservation through resistance training is more important than hitting the lower end of the BMI range.
