Testosterone's Role in Male Body Composition
Testosterone is the primary anabolic hormone in men and the main reason men build muscle faster and carry less body fat than women. Testosterone:
- Stimulates muscle protein synthesis: Higher testosterone allows greater muscle hypertrophy in response to resistance training. This is why men gain muscle roughly 2× faster than women (per kg LBM).
- Reduces fat storage: Testosterone inhibits lipoprotein lipase (the enzyme that stores fat in fat cells) and promotes fat oxidation.
- Promotes android fat distribution: Testosterone directs fat storage to the abdomen rather than hips/thighs. This "apple-shaped" pattern is more metabolically harmful than the gynoid distribution in women.
- Supports bone density: Testosterone is anabolic for bone as well as muscle, contributing to men's generally higher bone mineral density.
Testosterone peaks in the mid-20s and declines approximately 1–2% per year after age 30. This gradual decline contributes to age-related muscle loss and abdominal fat accumulation in men.
Android Fat Distribution: Why Belly Fat Is Dangerous for Men
Men store fat preferentially in the abdomen (android or "apple-shaped" distribution). This abdominal fat consists of two types:
- Subcutaneous fat: Under the skin — visible as the "belly." Metabolically less harmful.
- Visceral fat: Around and between organs — invisible from outside. Metabolically active and strongly associated with insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
Key thresholds for men: waist circumference >94 cm (37 in) indicates increased risk; >102 cm (40 in) indicates high risk.
