How Body Fat Affects Athletic Performance
The relationship between body fat and performance is sport-dependent and non-linear:
- Endurance sports (running, cycling): Body fat is "dead weight" — extra mass that must be moved without contributing to power output. Every extra kilogram of body fat reduces running economy by approximately 1% per kg. Elite marathon runners (6–9% BF) have the power-to-weight ratio optimised for sustained performance. However, going too lean (below ~6% for men) impairs hormonal function and recovery.
- Strength and power sports (powerlifting, throwing): Absolute strength is the goal, not strength-to-weight ratio. Higher body mass (including some fat) can contribute to stability and leverage. Most elite powerlifters compete at 15–22% body fat, not single-digit percentages.
- Weight-class sports (wrestling, boxing, judo): Athletes often compete at the lowest body fat possible within their class to maximise muscle mass at a given weight. This creates a dangerous incentive for extreme weight cutting — a significant health and performance risk.
- Aesthetic sports (bodybuilding, gymnastics): Competition body fat (4–8% men, 10–15% women) is extreme and unsustainable. Competitors spend most of the year at Athlete category (6–13% men), peaking for competitions before immediately regaining.
The Cost of Going Too Lean as an Athlete
Athletes who push body fat below their optimal range risk significant performance and health consequences — collectively called Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S):
- Reduced power output and muscular endurance (muscles lack glycogen and fuel)
- Impaired recovery and increased injury risk (reduced collagen synthesis, bone stress)
- Hormonal suppression: testosterone in men, amenorrhea and oestrogen decline in women
- Compromised immune function and increased illness frequency
- Psychological consequences: obsession with food, anxiety, disordered eating patterns
- Bone stress fractures from low oestrogen/testosterone combined with high training load
