Every effective training split — whether full body, upper/lower, or a push/pull/legs rotation — is built from these 7 major muscle groups. Understanding each group's function and best exercises lets you build (or evaluate) any programme with confidence.

These weekly set ranges represent totals across all exercises targeting that muscle group, spread across 2–3 training days per week for optimal results. Note that compound lifts like the squat and deadlift contribute sets to multiple muscle groups simultaneously (e.g., squats count toward both legs and glutes).

Push, Pull, and Legs: The Functional Categories
Beyond the 7 anatomical groups, muscles are often organised functionally for programming purposes: push (chest, shoulders, triceps — muscles that extend a limb away from the body), pull (back, biceps, rear delts — muscles that draw a limb toward the body), and legs (quads, hamstrings, glutes, calves). This is the basis of the popular push/pull/legs (PPL) split, which naturally groups synergistic muscles into the same training day, minimising interference between sessions and allowing higher frequency per group.
