Rep Ranges by Goal
The relationship between rep range and training outcome is well-established in exercise science, though the differences are smaller than traditionally believed. The most important variable is not rep range but proximity to failure — hard sets close to failure produce hypertrophy across a wide range of rep ranges.

1RM = one-rep maximum. All rep ranges produce hypertrophy when sets are taken close to failure — the primary advantage of lower rep ranges is greater absolute strength development.

Weekly Volume: How Many Sets Per Muscle Group?
Weekly volume — total hard sets per muscle group per week — is the primary driver of hypertrophy in trained individuals. The dose-response relationship between volume and muscle growth is well established, with gains increasing up to a ceiling that varies by individual and muscle group.

Per muscle group per week. "Hard set" = set taken within 1–4 reps of failure. These are estimates from meta-analyses — individual variation is significant. Beginners respond well to lower volumes; advanced lifters require more volume to continue progressing.
What Counts as a "Hard Set"?
Not all sets produce the same hypertrophic stimulus. The most productive sets are those taken to within 1–4 reps of momentary muscular failure (stopping 1–4 reps before you cannot perform another clean rep). Sets stopped with 8–10 reps in reserve at any given weight produce minimal hypertrophic stimulus regardless of rep range or load. This is why "going through the motions" with comfortable weights produces little muscle growth despite consistent training.
For beginners: working within 3–4 reps of failure is appropriate to develop technique and movement confidence before pushing closer to failure. For intermediates and beyond: taking at least some sets within 1–2 reps of failure is necessary to provide sufficient mechanical tension for continued adaptation.
