What Are Maintenance Calories?
Maintenance calories — also called TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) — are the number of calories you need to consume each day to maintain your current body weight. Eating below this creates a calorie deficit (fat loss); eating above it creates a calorie surplus (muscle gain or fat gain). Eating at maintenance means your body weight is stable over time.
TDEE is calculated from your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) multiplied by an activity factor that accounts for your daily movement and exercise. Note that TDEE changes as body weight, muscle mass, and activity level change — so maintenance macros require periodic recalibration.
Maintenance Macros: Recommended Ratios
At maintenance calories, macro targets are more flexible than during a cut or bulk because there is no deficit creating competitive demands on the protein requirement. However, a high-protein allocation remains the most evidence-based approach for active individuals — preserving muscle, supporting training adaptations, and maintaining satiety:

At maintenance, carbohydrates receive the largest share because there is no need to reduce them for deficit purposes and because glycogen availability at full maintenance supports training performance better than at a deficit. This is one reason training performance typically improves markedly during a maintenance or diet break phase after an extended cut.

Why a Maintenance Phase Matters
Spending intentional time at maintenance after an extended cut has several physiologically meaningful benefits:
- Hormonal recovery: Prolonged calorie restriction suppresses leptin, testosterone, and thyroid hormones. Returning to maintenance restores these to baseline within 2–4 weeks.
- Metabolic rate recovery: Adaptive thermogenesis — the downward drift of TDEE during a cut — partially reverses during a maintenance phase, making subsequent cutting phases more productive.
- Training performance: Strength and training volume typically recover significantly when calories and carbohydrates are restored to maintenance.
- Psychological reset: Dietary restriction fatigue, food preoccupation, and adherence erosion are reduced during maintenance phases.
A maintenance phase of 2–8 weeks between a cut and the next dietary phase (whether another cut or a bulk) is a well-supported practice in evidence-based body composition programming.
