How Running Calorie Burn Is Calculated
Calories burned running are estimated using MET values (Metabolic Equivalent of Task), a standardised measure of exercise intensity published in the Compendium of Physical Activities (Ainsworth et al., 2011). The formula used by the American College of Sports Medicine is:
Calories/hour = MET × body weight (kg) × 1.05
Running MET values range from approximately 7.0 at a slow jog (8 km/h) to over 14.0 at a fast race pace (14–16 km/h). The two dominant variables are body weight and speed: a heavier runner burns more calories at any given pace, and a faster runner burns more calories per minute.
