What Is Running Pace?
Running pace is the amount of time it takes you to cover one unit of distance — typically expressed in minutes per kilometre (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mi). A pace of 5:00 min/km means you cover one kilometre every five minutes.
Pace is the standard measurement used in most recreational and competitive running because it is directly tied to race finish times. If you know your pace, you can predict exactly when you will cross the finish line. Speed in km/h or mph is mathematically equivalent but less intuitive for pacing strategy during a race.
How to Calculate Running Pace

- Pace (min/km) = Total time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
- Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ Time (hours)
Example: You ran 10 km in 50 minutes.

- Speed = 10 ÷ (50/60) = 12.0 km/h

5 Evidence-Based Ways to Improve Your Running Pace
1. Build Your Aerobic Base First
The majority of your weekly mileage — 70–80% — should be done at an easy, conversational pace. Research published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research consistently shows that a strong aerobic base is the foundation of faster race times. Resist the temptation to run every workout hard; easy running builds the mitochondrial density and capillary network that power all faster efforts.
