The Timeline Is a Projection, Not a Guarantee
A weight loss timeline calculator takes three inputs — current weight, goal weight, and weekly loss rate — and does simple arithmetic to project a goal date. That output is only as stable as those three inputs. Your current weight fluctuates daily. Your effective weekly rate depends on how consistently you actually hit your calorie target. And your goal weight is the only input that typically stays fixed. Because two of the three inputs move, the projected date moves with them.
This is normal and expected — the calculator isn't wrong each time it updates, it's correctly reflecting new information. The mistake is treating the very first projection as a fixed contract rather than a rough estimate to be refined over time.
TDEE Drift: The Biggest Hidden Cause
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is not a fixed number — it changes as your body weight changes. Losing 5 kg can lower your TDEE by roughly 100–150 kcal/day, simply because a lighter body requires less energy for basic function and movement. If you don't adjust your calorie target downward to match, your real-world deficit quietly shrinks, and your effective weekly rate slows even though your calorie intake hasn't changed.

Water Weight and Day-to-Day Noise
Body weight can swing 1–2 kg in a single day from sodium intake, carbohydrate intake, hydration status, and hormonal cycles — none of which reflect actual fat loss or gain. If you re-enter your "current weight" into a timeline calculator on a high-water-retention day, the projected date will shift, even though nothing about your actual trajectory has changed. Use a 7-day rolling average of your morning weight as the input instead of a single day's reading to avoid this noise skewing your projection.
