How the Weight Loss Timeline Math Works
The starting point for any weight loss timeline is the energy-balance rule: roughly 7,700 kcal of accumulated deficit corresponds to about 1 kg of fat loss. If you run a consistent 500 kcal/day deficit, that works out to about 3,500 kcal/week — roughly 0.45 kg per week, or a little under 2 kg per month. Double the deficit to 1,000 kcal/day and the math suggests close to 4 kg per month. On paper, hitting a 10 kg goal at that pace takes about ten weeks.

What a Realistic Month-by-Month Timeline Looks Like
A more accurate way to think about your timeline is in three phases: an initial fast-loss phase, a steady-state phase, and a late-diet slowdown phase. Here's how a typical 10 kg loss goal tends to unfold in practice, compared with the simple linear projection:

The net effect: total loss after six months usually ends up close to the original projection, but the week-to-week and month-to-month pattern is uneven rather than a straight line down.
Why Your Actual Timeline Will Run Longer Than the Math Predicts
As body weight drops, so does TDEE — a smaller body simply burns fewer calories at rest and during activity. This means a deficit that was 500 kcal/day at your starting weight can shrink to 300–350 kcal/day by month three or four if you don't adjust your intake downward. On top of that, a phenomenon called adaptive thermogenesis causes metabolic rate to drop slightly more than body-weight changes alone would predict, as the body tries to defend against energy loss.
A practical rule of thumb: budget for your real-world timeline to run 10–20% longer than a simple linear projection, and plan to recalculate your calorie target every 4–6 weeks as your weight changes.
