What Is VO2 Max?
VO2 max is the maximum rate at which your body can consume oxygen during intense exercise, measured in millilitres of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min). It is widely considered the single best indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance capacity — a higher VO2 max means your heart, lungs, and muscles are more efficient at delivering and using oxygen.
The gold-standard measurement requires a laboratory treadmill or cycle ergometer test with metabolic gas analysis. This calculator instead uses a validated non-exercise estimation method based on your resting heart rate, which requires no equipment and no exertion.
How This Calculator Works
This tool uses the Uth-Sørensen-Overgaard-Pedersen non-exercise formula, which estimates VO2 max from the ratio between your estimated maximum heart rate (220 − age) and your resting heart rate:
VO2max = 15.3 × (HRmax ÷ HRrest)
This method correlates well (r ≈ 0.90) with directly measured VO2 max in healthy adults, though it is less precise for highly trained athletes or people on heart-rate-affecting medication such as beta-blockers.

The category thresholds used in this calculator are general adult benchmarks and are not adjusted for age — VO2 max naturally declines with age, so a 55-year-old in the "Good" category is doing considerably better relative to their age group than a 25-year-old in the same category.
How to Improve Your VO2 Max
- Zone 2 (easy, conversational-pace) cardio 3–4×/week builds the aerobic base that raises VO2 max over months.
- High-intensity interval training (HIIT) 1–2×/week produces some of the fastest VO2 max gains in research.
- Track your heart rate training zones to make sure your easy runs stay easy.
- Consistency matters more than intensity — VO2 max typically improves 10–20% over 8–12 weeks of regular aerobic training.
- Resting heart rate tends to drop as VO2 max improves — recheck this calculator every 4–6 weeks to track progress.
