Why Static Stretching Before Running Is Counterproductive
Holding a static stretch for 30–60 seconds before a cold run temporarily reduces muscle-tendon stiffness. This sounds beneficial, but reduced stiffness actually impairs the elastic energy storage that makes running efficient — the same mechanism that makes a stiff spring store and return energy better than a loose one. Meta-analyses of pre-run static stretching consistently show no reduction in injury risk and small but measurable reductions in running economy and power output.
The correct pre-run approach is dynamic movement — controlled movements that take joints through their running range of motion at gradually increasing speed. Dynamic warm-up raises muscle temperature, improves neuromuscular activation, and increases joint range of motion without reducing stiffness-dependent energy return.

Pre-Run Dynamic Warm-Up (5 Minutes)
Perform each movement for 20–30 metres or 30–45 seconds, moving continuously. Begin with a 5-minute brisk walk before starting the dynamic sequence.

Post-Run Static Stretching Routine (10 Minutes)
After your run, while muscles are warm, perform each static stretch. Hold for 30–45 seconds per side, breathing normally. Do not force range — stretch to mild tension, not pain.
