Calorie Comparison: Running vs Walking Per Minute
Using validated MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities, the calorie burn per minute for a 75 kg person:
| Activity | MET | 60 kg | 75 kg | 90 kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walking moderate (4.5 km/h) | 3.5 | 3.7 kcal/min | 4.6 kcal/min | 5.5 kcal/min |
| Walking brisk (6 km/h) | 4.3 | 4.5 kcal/min | 5.7 kcal/min | 6.8 kcal/min |
| Running slow jog (8 km/h) | 8.0 | 8.4 kcal/min | 10.5 kcal/min | 12.6 kcal/min |
| Running moderate (10 km/h) | 9.8 | 10.3 kcal/min | 12.9 kcal/min | 15.4 kcal/min |
kcal/min. Calculated using MET × weight(kg) × 0.0175. Running at 8 km/h burns approximately 2.3× more calories per minute than moderate walking for the same body weight.

The Surprising Per-Kilometre Comparison
Per minute, running burns approximately 2–2.5× more calories than walking. But per kilometre — the same physical distance — the difference is much smaller, because running covers that distance in much less time. The well-known approximation:
Calories per km ≈ 1 kcal × body weight (kg) — for both walking and running
For a 75 kg person: approximately 75 kcal per km walked, approximately 90–100 kcal per km run. Running burns 20–35% more calories per kilometre — significant, but not the 2× difference most people assume. The practical implication: if you can cover the same distance, walking and running produce similar calorie burns. Running is more time-efficient (more kcal per hour), but walking is more sustainable for longer durations.
Head-to-Head: 45 Minutes of Each

| Slow jog (8 km/h) | 378 kcal | 473 kcal | 567 kcal | 6.0 km |
| Moderate run (10 km/h) | 463 kcal | 579 kcal | 695 kcal | 7.5 km |
