Do Women Need Less Protein Than Men?
Women do not need less protein than men on a bodyweight basis. The recommended protein intake is calculated per kilogram of body weight — a metric that inherently accounts for average differences in body size between sexes. A 60 kg woman and a 60 kg man have identical bodyweight-derived protein targets.
Where the comparison differs is absolute grams per day — because women typically weigh less than men, their absolute protein targets are lower. But the g/kg formula is the same. The standard RDA of 0.8 g/kg represents the minimum to prevent deficiency in sedentary adults of either sex. For active women — particularly those exercising for body composition or performance goals — the evidence consistently supports targets of 1.6–2.2 g/kg.

Protein Needs for Women by Age and Goal
Protein requirements for women are not static — they increase with age due to anabolic resistance (the gradual reduction in the muscle protein synthesis response to a given protein dose), hormonal changes, and the accelerated muscle loss that begins in the 30s and intensifies after menopause.

For a 60 kg woman in her 40s who exercises regularly and aims for body composition maintenance, a target of 2.0 g/kg = 120 g of protein per day. Spread across 4 meals, that is approximately 30 g per meal — entirely achievable without supplements.

Debunking the "High Protein Makes Women Bulky" Myth
This is perhaps the most persistent misconception in women's fitness nutrition. The concern — that eating more protein will cause women to develop large, bulky musculature — is not supported by any physiological mechanism.
Maximum muscle hypertrophy requires three conditions simultaneously: resistance training progressive overload over months to years, a calorie surplus, and high testosterone levels to support the anabolic environment. Women produce approximately 15–20× less testosterone than men. This hormonal environment sets a natural ceiling on muscle mass gain that is well below the "bulky" threshold — regardless of protein intake.
What higher protein intake does for women: it supports lean tissue retention during fat loss (preventing the simultaneous muscle loss that makes body recomposition slow), increases satiety and reduces hunger on a calorie deficit, and supports metabolic rate maintenance over time. These are the benefits — not an increased risk of excessive muscle development.
