Periodization Guide: Linear vs Undulating Programming Explained

Periodization is the systematic, planned variation of training stress over time to maximise long-term adaptation while managing fatigue. It is the tool that takes a lifter beyond the beginner linear progression phase and allows continued progress for years. The Three Levels of Periodization

Model 3: Weekly Undulating Periodization (WUP)

WUP varies the training stimulus week-to-week rather than session-to-session. Each week has a distinct focus (e.g., Week 1 = volume, Week 2 = moderate, Week 3 = intensity, Week 4 = deload), cycling through a 3–4 week wave repeatedly. This provides variety and prevents monotony while being simpler to execute than DUP.
