Fat Loss Is Smooth — the Scale Isn't
Fat mass genuinely does decrease gradually and continuously when you're in a sustained calorie deficit — there's no physiological mechanism for actual fat tissue to jump around day to day. What jumps around is total body weight, which includes water, glycogen-bound water, gut contents, and even bone and organ weight shifts related to hydration. The scale measures total mass, not fat mass specifically, which is exactly why it can move in the opposite direction of your true trend for days at a time.

The Main Sources of Scale Noise

Any one of these can mask several days of real fat loss, or make it look like you gained weight during a week you were fully in a deficit. Recognizing these patterns prevents unnecessary panic and diet changes based on noise rather than signal.
