The Boston Marathon uses age-graded qualifying standards. The table below shows official BQ standards for 2025 — note that actual cutoff times are typically 2–6 minutes faster due to oversubscription:

Marathon Pacing Strategy
Why Even or Negative Splits Win
Going out too fast in a marathon is the single most common race-day mistake. Unlike a 5K where you can partially recover from an aggressive start, the marathon is long enough that early glycogen depletion becomes catastrophic — typically manifesting as the wall at kilometres 30–32.
Research on elite marathon performances consistently shows that the fastest races are run with negative or even splits — the second half equal to or slightly faster than the first. A practical rule: target your first half split 1–2 minutes slower than your projected half time from the calculator above.
Fuelling Strategy
The human body stores approximately 2,000 kcal of glycogen — enough for roughly 30–35 km of marathon-pace running. For any marathon goal beyond 2:30, supplemental carbohydrate intake during the race is not optional; it is essential.
- Take the first gel or chews by km 10–12 — before you feel hungry
- Repeat every 30–45 minutes for the remainder of the race
- Practise your fuelling strategy in long training runs — never try a new gel product on race day
