The ketogenic diet achieves a metabolic state called ketosis — where the body shifts from using glucose as its primary fuel to using ketone bodies derived from fat — by severely restricting carbohydrate intake. The standard keto macro breakdown is:

Net Carbs vs Total Carbs: What Actually Counts
Net carbs = total carbohydrates − dietary fibre (− sugar alcohols for some calculations). Dietary fibre is not digested or absorbed into the bloodstream, so it does not raise blood glucose or trigger an insulin response. It therefore does not contribute to ketosis disruption.
Calculating net carbs rather than total carbs is essential for correctly assessing whether a food fits within keto macros. Examples:
- 100 g avocado: 9 g total carbs − 7 g fibre = 2 g net carbs
- 100 g broccoli: 7 g total carbs − 2.6 g fibre = 4.4 g net carbs
- 100 g raspberries: 12 g total carbs − 6.5 g fibre = 5.5 g net carbs
- 1 slice white bread (~30 g): 15 g total carbs − 0.6 g fibre = 14.4 g net carbs

Why Protein Must Stay Moderate on Keto
One of the most common keto macro mistakes is treating it like a high-protein diet. On a standard ketogenic diet, protein must stay in a moderate range (20–25% of calories) — not because protein is harmful, but because of gluconeogenesis: the liver can convert excess amino acids into glucose when glucose availability is very low.
If protein intake is too high (generally over 35–40% of calories on keto), the resulting glucose production from gluconeogenesis can be sufficient to maintain blood glucose levels above the threshold needed for ketone production — effectively preventing or reducing ketosis.
The practical protein target on keto is 1.2–1.6 g/kg of body weight for most people — adequate for muscle maintenance but below the level that would significantly stimulate gluconeogenesis. Active individuals or those concerned about muscle loss can use the upper end (1.6 g/kg).
