What Is BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest — lying still, awake, in a thermoneutral environment, in a post-absorptive state (not digesting food). It represents the minimum energy required to sustain basic physiological functions: breathing, circulation, organ function, cell maintenance, and thermoregulation.
BMR accounts for approximately 60–70% of total daily calorie expenditure in sedentary individuals and is the largest single component of energy needs. It is calculated using validated prediction equations — the most accurate of which for healthy adults is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation:
- Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) + 5
- Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) − 161
Example: a 35-year-old woman, 65 kg, 165 cm has a BMR of: (10 × 65) + (6.25 × 165) − (5 × 35) − 161 = 650 + 1,031 − 175 − 161 = 1,345 kcal/day.

What Is TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure)?
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the total number of calories your body burns across an entire day — including BMR plus all forms of physical activity and digestion. TDEE is always higher than BMR and represents your actual daily calorie requirement to maintain your current body weight.
TDEE has four components:
- BMR (~60–70%): The resting calorie baseline calculated above.
- NEAT (~15–30%): Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis — calories burned through incidental movement: walking, standing, fidgeting. Highly variable between individuals.
- EAT (~5–10%): Exercise Activity Thermogenesis — calories burned during planned, structured exercise.
- TEF (~10%): Thermic Effect of Food — energy used to digest, absorb, and metabolise food. Protein has the highest TEF (20–30%); fat the lowest (0–3%).
TDEE is typically estimated by multiplying BMR by an activity factor: sedentary (BMR × 1.2), lightly active (× 1.375), moderately active (× 1.55), very active (× 1.725), or extremely active (× 1.9).
Continuing the example: the same 35-year-old woman with a BMR of 1,345 kcal and a moderately active lifestyle has a TDEE of 1,345 × 1.55 = 2,085 kcal/day — 740 kcal more than her BMR.
