Cortisol, Sleep, and Abdominal Fat Storage

What the Research Says About Sleep and Diet Outcomes
A controlled crossover study directly compared identical calorie-restricted diets under two sleep conditions: 8.5 hours versus 5.5 hours per night. Total weight lost was similar between conditions — but the composition of that weight loss differed substantially. In the sleep-restricted condition, participants lost significantly less fat mass and significantly more lean body mass for the same total weight lost, alongside increased hunger and reduced energy expenditure.
This is a critical distinction: sleep restriction doesn't necessarily stop the scale from moving, but it changes what you're losing. Less fat loss and more muscle loss for the same deficit is a worse outcome for body composition, metabolic rate, and long-term weight maintenance.
