What Is Dehydration and Why It Impairs Performance
Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluid than it takes in, creating a deficit that disrupts normal physiological function. The human body is approximately 60% water by weight, and even small imbalances — as little as 1% of body weight — are sufficient to measurably impair physical and cognitive performance.
Fluid is lost continuously through sweat, urine, respiration, and bowel movements. Under normal conditions, a sedentary adult loses approximately 2–3 litres of fluid per day through these combined pathways. During exercise in hot conditions, sweat alone can account for losses of 1–2.5 litres per hour — a rate that outpaces most people's instinct to drink.
The performance impact of dehydration is dose-dependent. Research consistently shows that a 1–2% body weight fluid deficit impairs endurance performance by 7–10% and reduces concentration and reaction time. At 3–5% body weight loss, physical capacity declines significantly. Above 6%, dehydration becomes clinically dangerous. Signs of Dehydration by Severity Level
The signs of dehydration follow a predictable progression as fluid deficit increases. Understanding this spectrum helps distinguish mild dehydration — which can be corrected by drinking water — from moderate or severe dehydration that may require more structured intervention.

An important nuance: thirst is a lagging indicator of dehydration. By the time most adults consciously experience thirst, mild dehydration has already occurred. The Urine Colour Chart: Easiest Way to Monitor Hydration
Urine colour is the most accessible, zero-cost hydration monitoring tool available. Because the kidneys concentrate urine in proportion to available fluid, urine colour directly reflects current hydration status — far more reliably than thirst alone.

Two caveats to note: B vitamins (particularly riboflavin/B2) can cause bright yellow urine regardless of hydration status. Beetroot, blackberries, and certain medications can also alter urine colour. If colour changes persist without a dietary explanation, consult a healthcare provider.
