Why Plant-Based Protein Sources Require More Planning
Two factors make plant-based protein planning more demanding than animal-based diets: protein quality and leucine density. Both affect how efficiently your body can use dietary protein for muscle repair and synthesis.
Protein quality is measured by the Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score (DIAAS) — a scale that accounts for both amino acid completeness and digestibility at the small intestinal level. Most animal proteins score above 1.0 (whey ~1.09, eggs ~1.13). Most plant proteins score below 1.0, meaning they deliver fewer usable amino acids per gram consumed. The practical consequence: plant-based eaters need to consume more total protein grams per kg body weight to achieve the same anabolic stimulus.
The current evidence suggests plant-based eaters should target 1.8–2.2 g/kg per day of total protein — the upper end of recommendations for active adults — compared to 1.6–2.0 g/kg for those consuming high-quality animal proteins. Use the Protein Intake Calculator to set your personalised target.

The Leucine Challenge for Plant-Based Eaters
Leucine is the essential amino acid that acts as the primary trigger for muscle protein synthesis. Animal proteins typically contain 8–10% leucine by weight. Most plant proteins contain only 4–7%, meaning a standard 30 g serving of a plant protein delivers considerably less leucine than the same amount from chicken or whey.
The leucine threshold for maximally stimulating MPS is approximately 2.5–3 g per meal. To reach this threshold from plant proteins:
- Prioritise soy-based foods (highest leucine among plant proteins): tofu, tempeh, edamame, soy milk.
- Use pea protein powder — it has ~8% leucine, one of the highest among plant powders.
- Aim for 35–40 g of protein per meal from plant sources (vs. 25–30 g from animal sources) to reliably exceed the leucine threshold.
