How Low Carb Diets Actually Cause Weight Loss
Low carbohydrate diets restrict the primary source of calories in most Western diets — bread, pasta, rice, cereals, sugar, and processed foods. When these foods are removed, most people automatically consume fewer total calories without actively counting them. This spontaneous calorie reduction is the primary mechanism through which low carb diets produce fat loss.
There is also an early, dramatic drop in scale weight in the first 1–2 weeks of low carb eating that is widely misattributed to fat loss. Carbohydrates are stored as glycogen (primarily in muscle and the liver), and each gram of glycogen is bound to approximately 3 g of water. Depleting glycogen stores when carbs are restricted releases 1–3 kg of water rapidly. This is real weight loss on the scale — but it is water, not fat.
The actual fat loss that follows is driven by the calorie deficit — not by any unique metabolic effect of carbohydrate restriction.

Low Carb vs Low Fat: What the Evidence Shows
The "low carb vs low fat" debate has been extensively studied. The most comprehensive meta-analysis — Johnston et al. (2014) in JAMA, analysing data from over 7,000 participants across multiple named diet trials — found:
- Low carb diets produced slightly greater weight loss at 6 months than low fat diets
- By 12 months, the difference largely disappeared — adherence became the dominant predictor of outcomes
- No dietary programme was consistently superior to another when total calories were equated

Genuine Advantages of Low Carb for Weight Loss
While the metabolic advantage of carbohydrate restriction is modest, low carb diets have real practical benefits for specific individuals:
- Higher satiety per calorie: Protein and fat are more satiating than carbohydrates, particularly refined carbohydrates. Low carb diets naturally increase the proportion of protein in the diet, which suppresses ghrelin, increases peptide YY, and reduces overall food intake more reliably than low-fat approaches in many individuals.
- Reduced insulin response: For individuals with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, reducing carbohydrate intake lowers post-meal insulin spikes — improving blood glucose control and potentially improving fat metabolism. This is a genuine, clinically relevant benefit beyond simple calorie reduction.
- Eliminates hyperpalatable foods: Most ultraprocessed, highly palatable, hard-to-stop-eating foods (crisps, cookies, sweetened drinks, pastries) are high in both refined carbohydrates and fat. Restricting carbs automatically eliminates most of these foods — reducing their passive overconsumption.
