Aerobic Exercise: The Single Biggest Lever
Consistent aerobic training is the most well-established way to lower resting heart rate. As cardiovascular fitness improves, the heart's stroke volume — the amount of blood pumped per beat — increases, meaning fewer total beats are needed to circulate the same amount of blood at rest. This is why endurance athletes commonly measure 40–60 bpm despite having a heart of similar size to an untrained person.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of interventional exercise studies found that structured aerobic training programmes reduced resting heart rate by an average of approximately 3–5 bpm across study populations, with larger reductions seen in less-fit individuals starting a new training programme. Both continuous moderate-intensity cardio and interval training produced meaningful reductions, though consistency over weeks mattered more than any single session's intensity.

Beyond Exercise: Sleep, Hydration, and Stress
Training is the primary long-term driver, but daily habits meaningfully affect where your RHR sits within your current fitness level:

- Hydration: Dehydration lowers blood volume, forcing the heart to beat faster to maintain circulation — even mild, everyday dehydration can add several bpm to your reading.
- Stress management: Chronic stress keeps the sympathetic nervous system activated, which elevates baseline heart rate. Consistent stress-reduction practices support a lower RHR over time, independent of training volume.
- Alcohol and caffeine: Both can temporarily elevate heart rate, including into the following morning after heavier consumption.
