Why Calorie Needs Change With Age
Two primary factors drive the age-related decline in calorie needs:
- Loss of lean muscle mass (sarcopenia): Adults lose 3–8% of muscle mass per decade after age 30, with acceleration after 60. Since muscle tissue is metabolically active (burning more calories at rest than fat tissue), this loss directly reduces Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Each kilogram of muscle lost reduces daily calorie expenditure by approximately 13 kcal.
- Reduced physical activity: Most adults become progressively less active with age — fewer exercise sessions, more sedentary work, and less spontaneous movement (NEAT). This reduces the "activity multiplier" portion of total calorie expenditure significantly more than the BMR decline alone.
The combined effect of these two factors produces an average calorie need reduction of approximately 100–150 kcal per decade — though this varies significantly with how well muscle mass is maintained through resistance exercise and adequate protein intake.

How to Slow the Age-Related Metabolic Decline
The reduction in calorie needs with age is not inevitable at the rate most people experience. Two interventions have the strongest evidence for attenuating age-related metabolic decline:
- Resistance training: Preserving and building muscle mass directly maintains metabolic rate. Adults who perform resistance training 2–3 times per week consistently show significantly smaller BMR declines compared to sedentary peers over 10-year periods.
- Adequate protein intake: Higher protein intake (1.2–1.6 g/kg for older adults) reduces the rate of age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia), directly preserving the metabolic contribution of lean tissue.
Calorie needs at 60 do not have to be dramatically lower than at 40 if lean mass is preserved through training and nutrition. The reference tables above represent population averages that include largely sedentary individuals — active older adults often maintain calorie needs closer to their 30s values.
